Gold Vermeil Care Guide
What is Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a thick layer of real gold plated over a solid 925 sterling silver base. At Beurre d'Or, our pieces are plated with 18k gold, giving them a rich, warm tone that rivals solid gold at a more accessible price point.
Unlike gold-filled or gold-plated jewelry, gold vermeil meets strict quality standards — requiring a minimum gold thickness of 2.5 microns over sterling silver. Our rings have an extra thick 3 micron layer, exceeding industry standards for durability. Furthermore, on the rings and the trombone chain we apply a protective e-coat finish, which seals the surface and delays tarnishing even further.
How to Care for Your Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil is beautiful but does require mindful wear to maintain its finish over time.
Do:
- Store in a soft pouch or jewelry box when not wearing
- Put your jewelry on last when getting ready
- Polish gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing
- Keep pieces separate to avoid scratching
Avoid:
- Water, swimming, and showering while wearing your pieces
- Perfume, creams, sanitiser, and harsh chemicals
- Sleeping or exercising while wearing your jewelry
- Stacking pieces that may cause friction
What to Expect Over Time
With frequent wear, the gold layer may gradually wear to reveal the sterling silver underneath — particularly on high-friction areas like the inside of rings. This is a natural characteristic of gold vermeil and is not considered a fault.
With proper care, your pieces will maintain their beautiful golden finish for much longer.
A Note on Our Trombone chain
This chain has a 2 micron gold vermeil layer with an e-coating — a deliberate choice to keep it accessible in price without compromising on its bold, luxurious look. If you'd prefer a thicker layer or solid gold, we're happy to help. Reach out at info@beurre-dor.com
